Governance and Policies
Since its inception, the School’s academic programs and research facilities are supervised by an academic advisory body known as the Managing Committee, which consists of elected representatives from a consortium of 190 leading North American colleges and universities.
The Board of Trustees, composed of distinguished women and men from the world of business, law, philanthropy, and academia, is responsible for the management of the School’s endowment, finances, and property, and has legal responsibility for the American School. The Gennadius Library of the American School is also guided by a distinguished Board of Overseers.
The American School’s administrative base is located in Princeton, New Jersey. Employing 15 full and part-time employees, the School’s administrative home houses the American School’s financial operations, publications office, development team, and administrative support for all academic programs. In Greece, the American School is headed by a Director appointed for a 5-year term by the Managing Committee. The Director oversees a staff of approximately 60 at the School in Athens and, together with the Andrew W. Mellon Professor of Classical Studies, carries out the academic program of the School.
