Σαν σήμερα: Florence Elizabeth ‘Ανθή’ Gennadius (1854-1952)

Florence 'Anthi' Gennadius died sixty-nine years ago today, on 14 January 1952, at East Molsesey in Surrey, UK. She was the youngest daughter of British politician Samuel Laing. Florence was a widow, 47 years old, when she met Joannes Gennadius in London. Her first husband was artist Edward Sherard Kennedy.  Joannes and Florence married in 1902 and lived happily together until his death in 1932. She quickly embraced her husband’s love for Greece and adopted her Greek name Anthi. Florence shared his love of book and art collecting and had a special interest in philanthropic activities; she was actively involved in the delivery of help to the Greek people during the Balkans Wars and after the Asia Minor Catastrophe. She also supported his decision to present his entire collection to the American School of Classical Studies at Athens that led to the creation of the Gennadius Library.  Anthi died on 14 January 1952, at the age of 97, in their country retreat at East Molsesey in Surrey.

Σαν σήμερα στις 14 Ιανουαρίου 1952 πέθανε η Florence Elizabeth Gennadius.  Η Florence ήταν η μικρότερη κόρη του Βρετανού πολιτικού Samuel Laing. Ήταν 47 ετών όταν γνωρίστηκε με τον Ιωάννη Γεννάδιο στο Λονδίνο. Ο πρώτος της γάμος ήταν με τον καλλιτέχνη Edward Sherard Kennedy. Με τον Ιωάννη Γεννάδιο παντρεύτηκαν το 1902 και έμειναν μαζί μέχρι τον θάνατο του το 1932. Πολύ σύντομα έδειξε την ίδια αγάπη που είχε και εκείνος για την Ελλάδα και υιοθέτησε το ελληνικό της όνομα, Ανθή. Μοιράστηκε με τον σύζυγό της την βαθιά αγάπη του για τη συλλογή βιβλίων και έργων τέχνης. Η ίδια είχε ιδιαίτερη φιλανθρωπική δράση κατά τη διάρκεια των Βαλκανικών Πολέμων και μετά την Μικρασιατική καταστροφή. Στήριξε την απόφαση του να δωρίσει στην Αμερικανική Σχολή τη συλλογή του που οδήγησε στη δημιουργία της Γενναδείου Βιβλιοθήκης. Η Ανθή έζησε μέχρι τα βαθιά γεράματά της. Απεβίωσε στην ηλικία των 97 ετών στην εξοχική τους κατοικία στο Surrey.
