New Publication: 54 Souidias: A History of the American School of Classical Studies at Athens

The American School of Classical Studies at Athens (ASCSA) is pleased to announce the publication of 54 Souidias: A History of the American School of Classical Studies at Athens, edited by Jenifer Neils.

This landmark publication offers an up-to-date and accessible account of the ASCSA’s remarkable 140-year history. Featuring essays from experts with close and long-standing involvement with the School, this comprehensive volume represents a once-in-a-lifetime contribution to the history of the institution by those who have lived and helped shape that history over the past decades. It therefore also makes a significant contribution to the historiography of classical studies and American engagement with Greece more broadly.

Lavishly illustrated chapters detail the evolution of the School’s academic programs including the celebrated Summer Sessions, the development and significance of the Blegen and Gennadius libraries, the dynamic role of the Archives as an active research center, and the expanding scope of the Wiener Laboratory for Archaeological Science. Other contributions trace the development of the School’s major excavations at Corinth and the Athenian Agora, highlighting pivotal moments like the outbreak of war and the introduction of iDig. The book also offers glimpses into the social fabric of the School through the history of Loring Hall, its newly renovated residential building, and recognizes the crucial role of adept financial management and philanthropic giving in sustaining the School’s mission. Brief sidebars highlight key figures and significant achievements in the School’s rich history, while appendixes and online supplements update the extensive records provided in the previously published histories of Lord and Meritt. As a worthwhile testament to the many people who have shaped the School into the leading research institution it is today, this book will be treasured by all who have stepped through the gates of 54 Souidias.
